Antepost betting, explained
What does antepost mean?
Antepost betting is backing a horse before the final field is declared - often months before the race. Prices are usually bigger than they will be on the day, because there is more that can go wrong: the horse has to stay fit, stay in training and be entered and declared to run.
What happens to an antepost bet if the horse does not run?
On a traditional antepost bet, the stake is lost if your horse does not line up - there is no refund for a non-runner. That is the trade for the bigger price. Markets priced 'non-runner no bet' return the stake instead, and bookmakers usually switch to those terms closer to the race. Check the terms before you bet; we do not place bets and this is not advice.
Where do the odds on this page come from?
Live from the Betfair exchange, read and stored every day. That means the prices here are what people are actually trading at rather than a bookmaker's board, and because we keep every day's reading we can also show which way each horse has moved - the steamers and the drifters - rather than only where it stands today.
