What the 2000 Guineas is

The 2000 Guineas is the first Classic of the British flat season. One mile, straight, on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket. Three-year-olds only, and they get one shot at it. Traditionally it is run on the first weekend of May.

That one-shot rule is what makes the race hard, and interesting. Nobody has run it before. Half the field has never gone a mile. Some have not run since September. The form book is thinner than for any other big race of the year, and the market forms months ahead anyway.

What wins it

A few patterns repeat, and they are worth knowing before any price is.

Top two-year-old form. The market is built on last season's big juvenile races - the Dewhurst, the National Stakes, the juvenile milers. A tall two-year-old reputation is what winter prices are made of.

The mile question. Plenty of brilliant juveniles were brilliant at six and seven furlongs. The Rowley Mile is a stiff, galloping mile that finds out pure speed. Pedigree and running style say more about it than a flashy juvenile figure does.

The trials. The Craven at Newmarket and the Greenham at Newbury come in April, and the Irish and French trials alongside them. Some winners prep there, some come straight from a winter break. A trial run answers the fitness question; skipping one leaves it open.

Stable strength. The big yards aim several horses at this race every year, and they do not always run the one the winter market liked. Which one actually turns up matters as much as any rating.

How the antepost market works

Antepost means backing a horse for a big race weeks or months out, at a bigger price than it will likely start at. The trade-off is simple and should be stated plainly: if the horse does not run, the stake is lost, unless the market is non-runner no bet. With three-year-olds over the winter, plans change constantly. That is the trade-off, and it is worth knowing before you take it.

The market itself is information. Horses shorten when work at home is good or a plan firms up. They drift when the news is quiet. Watching who moves, and when, tells you what the people closest to these horses expect - long before an official announcement.
